Schubert 'Der Tod und das Mädchen'
The string quartet is the symphony of chamber music. For more than two centuries composers have shared their deepest emotions in this intimate chamber music genre. So did Franz Schubert. In his famous string quartet Der Tod und das Mädchen life and death circle around each other. On the one hand the young girl who wants to live, on the other hand death as a kind man who promises her soft arms to die in. In the slow movement Schubert reuses the song of the same name that he composed seven years earlier. And Shostakovich? In his Fourth String Quartet he expresses his aversion to Stalinist terror. Music in which he uses Jewish folk music remarkably often

Especially their performance of Shostakovich's string quartets appeals to the imagination and earned them rave reviews in the press
