Schubert 'Der Tod und das Mädchen'

The string quartet is the symphony of chamber music. For more than two centuries composers have shared their deepest emotions in this intimate chamber music genre. So did Franz Schubert. On the one hand the young girl who wants to live, on the other hand death as a kind man who promises her soft arms to die in. In the slow movement Schubert reuses the song of the same name that he composed seven years earlier. And Shostakovich? In his Fourth String Quartet he expresses his aversion to Stalinist terror. Music in which he uses Jewish folk music remarkably often
